MADE at NYU Langone Health Innovation Fellowship
Is the MADE at NYU Langone Health Fellowship Right for You?
The MADE at NYU Langone Health Innovation Fellowship is designed for accomplished, early- to mid-career professionals who are ready to deepen their impact in healthcare innovation. It is not an entry-level program, nor is it intended for professionals already established in senior executive roles.
As MADE’s flagship 10-month, full-time paid fellowship, the program offers an intensive, team-based experience in medtech innovation at NYU Grossman School of Medicine and NYU Langone Health. Fellows learn a practical, repeatable approach to discovering meaningful clinical needs, developing technology-based solutions, and preparing promising concepts for clinical, commercial, and patient impact.
The fellowship may be a strong match if you bring a demonstrated record of academic, clinical, technical, professional, or entrepreneurial achievement—and are eager to apply your skills to complex healthcare challenges alongside clinicians, engineers, mentors, and commercialization experts.
How to Evaluate Your Readiness
Use the education and experience framework below to determine if this is an appropriate point in your career to apply for the MADE Fellowship. It is intended to help prospective applicants:
- Confirm they meet the fellowship’s baseline eligibility expectations
- Identify whether additional professional or educational experience would be beneficial before applying
- Consider whether another opportunity may better match their current career stage
Beyond years of experience, MADE looks for applicants who demonstrate initiative, sound judgment, curiosity, analytical rigor, and the ability to collaborate across disciplines. Fellows must be prepared to contribute meaningfully in an environment where needs, solutions, and pathways forward are often initially uncertain.
Education and Experience Expectations
Find your highest completed degree in the first column, then review the corresponding minimum experience expectation.
| Highest Completed Education | Minimum Relevant Experience at Time of Application |
|---|---|
| Bachelor’s degree | Four or more years of professional experience |
| Master’s degree | Three or more years of professional experience following undergraduate and/or master’s training |
| MD or equivalent medical degree | At least two years of completed residency training, or two or more years of professional experience after medical school |
| PhD | No additional post-degree experience is required, provided the PhD is complete at the time of application |
What Counts as Qualifying Professional Experience?
Professional experience should show sustained responsibility, ownership, and professional growth. In general, applicants should be able to demonstrate that they have held substantive roles long enough to make meaningful contributions and develop a track record of results.
Short-term, episodic, or primarily observational roles, such as internships, do not independently fulfill the experience expectations above. However, they may strengthen an application by illustrating relevant skills, exposure to healthcare or technology, technical capabilities, or early evidence of leadership.
Clinical residencies, postdoctoral appointments, research fellowships, and comparable full-time training roles may be considered relevant professional experience when they involve sustained responsibility and meaningful engagement over an extended period.
Candidates from Diverse Backgrounds Are Welcome
Experience in healthcare or medtech is valuable, but it is not required. MADE welcomes applicants from fields such as engineering, computer science, data science, artificial intelligence, life sciences, medicine, nursing, design, business, product development, research, entrepreneurship, and technology.
Applicants transitioning into healthcare should clearly describe:
- Why they are pursuing healthcare innovation
- How their prior experience translates to clinical or medtech challenges
- The type of impact they hope to make
- How the MADE at NYU Innovation Fellowship fits into their longer-term goals
Particular value is placed on candidates who have helped develop, assess, launch, or advance a product, technology, startup, research initiative, or other complex project.
Additional Considerations
The fellowship is a full-time, 10-month commitment. Fellows are expected to participate fully in the curriculum, clinical observations, team project work, mentorship activities, and program events.
Applicants must also be able to meet NYU Langone’s institutional requirements for access to clinical environments, including applicable background-check, occupational-health-clearance, and immunization requirements.
Professionals with extensive senior leadership experience, particularly those with more than a decade in executive, senior management, or similarly advanced roles, may find that a different opportunity is better aligned with their level of responsibility and career goals.
The strongest applicants will bring more than credentials: they will demonstrate a readiness to take ownership, work productively across disciplines, communicate with both technical and nontechnical stakeholders, and build new solutions for difficult healthcare problems.
