Gloria Coruzzi, PhD, Carroll & Milton Petrie Professor at New York University’s College of Arts and Science, has been named to the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) for pioneering discoveries that have transformed plant biology and advanced sustainable agriculture. Dr. Coruzzi joins the 2025 class of NAI Fellows, the highest professional distinction awarded solely to academic inventors.

Dr. Coruzzi is internationally recognized for establishing the field of nitrogen sensing in plants and for her groundbreaking work on nitrogen use efficiency, research that addresses one of agriculture’s most pressing challenges. Nitrogen is a key limiting factor in plant growth, yet conventional fertilizer use is costly and environmentally damaging. Her work has uncovered the genetic and regulatory networks that govern how plants assimilate and utilize nitrogen, enabling the development of new strategies to improve crop yield while reducing fertilizer loss and environmental harm.

Dr. Coruzzi is the named inventor on numerous U.S. and international patents related to improving nitrogen use efficiency in crops such as maize and rice. These innovations have been licensed to major agricultural companies and exemplify translational research that bridges basic science and practical application.

In addition to her research contributions, Dr. Coruzzi has played a significant leadership role at NYU, serving as chair of the Department of Biology for eight years and helping to build the NYU Center for Genomics & Systems Biology. Her work has attracted more than $20 million in federal research funding, and she is a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

The 2025 Class of NAI Fellows includes 169 U.S. inventors and 16 international inventors whose work spans fields ranging from artificial intelligence to regenerative medicine. Collectively, the class holds more than 5,300 U.S. patents.

Dr. Coruzzi will be formally honored at the NAI 15th Annual Conference on June 4, 2026, in Los Angeles, California.
